The first cricket game for 2012 was played between Krishna C.C and Melita C.C in the Winter League. The Melita team batted first with Dave Borg and Tim Wheeler opening the batting. Wheeler was first to go and gave Tony Slater the first wicket for the year, this in the first over of the day.
Borg went on to score 11 runs which included one boundary. Frank Spiteri batted well and scored 25 runs from 23 balls before being caught. He scored two fours along the way.
Andy Lenard made sixteen runs before retiring. Andy Naudi was going along quite well having 23 runs from fifteen balls until he tried to hit a Ronnie Sacco off spinner for six and only got as far as Tony Slater. The two Justin’s, Brooke and Farrin-Thorne did not trouble the scorers much making three and two runs respectively.
Chris Naudi made eighteen runs from 14 balls and remained not out. Adam Krishna held his fort well for thirteen balls and also remained not out with one run. Ronnie Sacco was the main wicket taker for Krishna with three wickets while Glen Tavilla took two.
The Krishna team went out all guns blazing, with Nowell Khosla retiring with 38 runs which included four fours, Glen Tavilla scoring 43 runs with four fours and a six.
Joy Ghoseroy made nine runs and Darren Grech made the winning runs with a pull shot to the boundary. Greg Symons, Daniel Galea, Mark G Sacco and Ronnie Sacco also batted but did not worry the scorers too much. Mark Sacco unfortunately did not face a ball but remained not out.
For the Melita team Andy Lenard took two wickets while Justin Brooke and Andy Naudi took a wicket each.
From the win Krishna earned seven points while Melita earned one.
Tomorrow, Marsa C.C play Melita C.C. In the morning from 9 till 10.30am the Sunoco Cricket Academy/nursery will be on.
