Football: Bank Of Valletta third division: Leaders Pembroke come from behind to draw with Xghajra

Pembroke came from two goals down when they shared the spoils with Xghajra Tornadoes to keep their unbeaten record in the league.

It was a good display by Xghajra who finished the first half two goals up but Pembroke made a good comeback to earn a point and keep their position on top.

Pembroke went close on the 13th minute when Camilleri saved two shots from Lydon Cilia and the rebound from Daniel Cremona.

Xghajra had a great chance on the 24th minute when Leonardi crossed the ball in the box but Magro’s header went a bit wide. Xghajra had another chance three minutes later when Karl Micallef took a great ball from Mifsud but his shot went ver y close.

Xghajra’s determination was turned into a goal when on the 37th minute Karl Micallef took advantage of an indecision in the Pembroke box and beat Calleja Cremona with a powerful shot.

Xghajra doubled their lead a minute later when goalscorer Karl Micallef bypassed two players and gave a through-ball to Aaron Pendry who made no mistake with another powerful shot in the box.

Pembroke pulled one back on the 57th minute when Frans Mizzi put the ball into his own net after a low cross by substitute Daniel Calleja Cremona.

Xghajra had the chance to regain their two goal cushion when they had a ball cleared off the line just one minute after. Pembroke levelled the score on the 71st minute when Lydon Cilia passed the ball to Matthew Borg who beat Camilleri with a low first-time shot.

Xghajra had the chance to go in front again when Aaron Pendry recieved a good ball and lobbed over Calleja Cremona but Rodney Caruana cleared the ball off the line. Two minutes later Camilleri tipped into a corner a free-kick from long range by Cilia.

Ghaxaq lost their first match of the season when they lost 1-0 to Fgura. It was a disappointing performance from Johann Zammit’s side who weren’t very dangerous with the most important chance came in the first half from Bjorn Dalli.

On the other hand Fgura won a very important match and with this win now they stand a chance to fight for promotion.

Fgura had their first chance of the game when Severino gave a good through ball to Michael Zammit who tried to round Verbina but the Ghaxaq goalkeeper took his ball with a good tackle.

On the 26th minute Verbina tipped a free-kick from Robert Adami. The first action from Ghaxaq came on the 30th minute when Marvik Grech crossed the ball to Bjorn Dalli but Attard saved his shot.

Ghaxaq had a golden chance on the 39th minute when Bjorn Dalli beat the offside trap but failed to score when alone with only the keeper to beat - his shot went over the bar.

Fgura opened the score on the 48th minute through Ricardo Severino Gongalves. The next action arrived in the 71st minute when Attard saved a central shot from Mark Ellul.

On the 75th minute Fgura could have doubled their lead when Severino gave a good ball Zammit but his shot was saved by Verbina. From the rebound came Bonett whose shot beat Verbina but found an Ghaxaq defender who deflected the ball into a corner.

On the 83rd minute another good action by Fgura when Leeroy made a good run and finished his action with a shot but his shot went very close the post and four minutes later Bjorn Dalli went close to equalise but his powerful shot went wide.

Marsascala 1

Just one goal scored 12 minutes from time was enough for Marsascala to take the three points home from their encounter against bottom side Kalkara. Marsascala, who had lost their previous two outings, are now with a total of 11 points.

The only action worthy of note in the first half came in the 9th minute, when after receiving from Dominicus, Scicluna's shot went inches wide.

Marsascala continued to dominate the second half and went close to scoring after 66 minutes, when Peplow's effort hit the crossbar. Fifteen minutes from stoppage time, Marsascala were down to ten men, when Felix Peplow committed his second bookable offence.

In the 78th minute, Malcolm Bugeja scored the only goal of the match, when after fleeing Kalkara's defence he beat goalkeeper Azzopardi with a powerful long-distance drive.

Two minutes from the end, Charles Cachia was sent off for Kalkara after committing his second bookable offence.

Swieqi 1

The duel between Swieqi and Qrendi resulted in a one-all draw, leaving both teams struggling in the lower end of the standings. Qrendi, who have lost their last three outings, are now on10 points, whereas Swieqi are in a slightly better position with 16.

Qrendi took the lead after just 13 minutes, when Bugeja temporarily blocked Darmanin's shot, and from the rebound, Adrian Muscat tapped the ball at the back of the net.

Swieqi were a lot more aggressive, especially in the second half. In the 54th minute, Fabien Debono's powerful effort was saved from above the line by Schembri. In the 61st minute, goalkeeper Zammit converted Sciberras's shot into a corner.

Ten minutes before stoppage time, Timothy Hampton fled the opposing defence and beat Zammit with a low shot, thus obtaining a very important point for his side. Just a few seconds from the end, goalscorer Timothy Hampton was sent off for dangerous play.
