Żminijietna – Voice of the Left believes that Mepa should withhold the permit for the development of a car park in Floriana, adjacent to the Floriana football ground, where the Independence ceremony was held.

The locality of Floriana is already filled up with parking facilities. It will be better if the ‘park and ride’ system is run successfully.

The problem of traffic congestion, pollution and lack of open spaces in urban areas are all attributed to the wrong policies that promote more the use of private cars.

It will make more sense if the Transport Authority works together with Mepa and the health sector to implement a national plan to promote more the use of public transport, more open spaces, planting of more trees, and more important, the reduction of carbon dioxide and air pollution.

Żminijietna appeals to Mepa, that before taking any decision on this application, assessment on the social, environmental and health impact should be made.
