Residents at Villa Messina were recently taken through a presentation on dental maintenance, sponsored by Corega, the brand of denture care products. Dental hygienists Veronica Montebello and Jacqueline Schembri explained the importance of oral hygiene and its extensive benefits for one’s overall health.

“Natural tooth enamel is tougher than denture surface, and so dentures require special cleaning techniques and specific products,” said Dental Hygienist Jacqueline Schembri. “In fact, incorrect brushing techniques or abrasive dental care products can cause scratches that lead to the build up of undesirable bacteria in dentures.”

During the talk, good denture cleaning practices were explained within the context of one’s overall health and comfort. “Studies show that good oral care strengthens one’s resilience to a variety of health concerns,” said Dental Hygienist Veronica Montebello. “Dentures should be cleaned daily with effective antimicrobial and antifungal agents.”

A recent World Dental Congress confirmed that unclean dentures are a chronic source of potentially harmful bacteria and fungi that may be associated with oral disease and increase the risk of diseases like heart diseases, hypertension and diabetes.

Denture adhesives help stabilise the dentures and improve chewing efficiency. Evidence shows that people who experience denture discomfort while eating are prone to avoid certain foods and have a lower nutritional intake. This in turn leads to suppression of immune system functionality and an increase in the chances of developing oral and other diseases.

Proper denture care includes brushing and soaking dentures and partials with the right products, like the preferred Corega, every day, to clean dentures without scratching.
