Dire Parking problems in Bugibba, Qawra

Malta Independent Sunday, 29 January 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The committee of ‘Safeguarding St Paul’s Bay’, an association formed to look after the interests of the residents of St Paul’s Bay, Bugibba, Qawra and hamlets would like to express its concerns to the already dire car parking situation in Bugibba and Qawra areas.

The aquarium project has seen the removal of some 350 spaces, some of which are expected to be re-instated when the project is complete. Although we are in the low season, the parking situation in Qawra and Bugibba has already become critical; the lack of parking spaces can already be felt, especially over the weekends, where as can be confirmed by anyone interested, every parking space available is taken and visitors to the area are bypassing these localities. This situation is already placing a strain on the local residents as well as on various businesses, which had already seen a substantial downturn in their turnover with the closure of a number of hotels in the area.

We therefore urge the relevant authorities to take the appropriate action to remedy the situation at the earliest, and before the beginning of the season, to introduce some parking spaces be it on a temporary basis. The Committee also wonders if the land recently returned by Teecom / Go can be converted temporarily into a car park, which will ease the problem
