Boxing: Knock Out win for Corito over Toby

Malta Independent Tuesday, 31 January 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

In front of a full house, “The Hitman”, Malta’s boxing heavyweight hero Billy Corito, made a grand finale to an electrifying night of boxing when he thrashed his UK challenger Ian Toby with a TKO in less than half way in the second of a six rounds fight, to score his eighth straight win.

Besides winning eight fights in a row this was the seventh time that Corito knocked out his opponents, six of whom in the second round and one in the first round - Mark McGarry in January 2011.

“Simply fantastic!”, exclaimed an overjoyed Spencer Brown, Chairman of the European Boxing Federation at the end of the EBF first Malta event organised in collaboration with local promoter Paul Borg. “The night gave the best to all concerned – an enthusiastic large crowd, good quality boxing and a rousing Corito performance”, elaborated Mr Brown.

“This was a big night for Corito and Boxing in Malta in general. The crowd showed its appreciation to excellent boxing, an encouraging outcome for future events”, remarked Joe Egan the Irish Heavyweight Boxing Legend and film star, now also EBF International spokesman.

The Big Night of Boxing held at the Sky Club, Paceville, was organised by local promoter Paul Borg in collaboration with the European Boxing Federation.

Further to the main Corito vs Toby fight the event consisted of five other non amateur/non Olympic bouts (with no head guards). The results were as follows:

(1) Dione Galea vs Jordan Black - Galea Winner; (2) Etienne Spiteri vs Slinky Cumberlbach - Cumberlbach Winner; (3) Clayton Vella vs Scott Conners – Draw; (4) Justin Grech vs Phill Worel - Worell Winner; (5) Tyronne Borg vs Dale Ball - Borg won.

Tyronne Borg’s bout was won with a knock out by the Maltese boxer who put down his opponent Ball seconds in the second round similarly to Corito’s victory. This was Borg’s sixth win in a row in his category.
