Żminijietna – Voice of the Left commends the government’s decision to replace the Censorship Board with a self-regulatory system, which means that from now onwards theatrical performances will be readily available for the public, according to age.
On the other hand, Żminijietna considers this step by the government in itself a contradiction, due to the fact that the two people involved in the Realtà newspaper case to date are still facing criminal charges “against public morality”, and that under such charges they may be condemned to a prison sentence. We call on the Minister concerned to amend the law in such a way that covers all aspects of censorship.
Żminijietna notes that the reforms which the government announced are not enough to change radically the Maltese laws regarding censorship, most of which are “backwards” when compared with the laws of the European Union. Żminijietna therefore calls for the compliance of Maltese laws with European ones.
