Oh we hope you excuse the pun in the headline. But the thought of it is absolutely terrifying! Not literally, perhaps. But could one possibly imagine what would happen in Malta if we had a proper snowfall?
If some weather sites are to be believed, then yes, Malta and other Mediterranean islands such as Pantelleria and Lampedusa could be hit by flurries of snow, either today or tomorrow.
There has been no warning of snow from the local met office, so far, at least. Snow is a wonderful thing, it is beautiful when it comes down and makes everything look like a scene out of the Chronicles of Narnia.
It is fun to play in, to make snowmen, snow angels and to have snowball fights. It is fun for families to take their kids out to play in and it’s also just refreshingly beautiful when snow starts to lay.
But then come the other things. Even to enjoy snow at its finest, you need waterproof gear, especially children, who would be rolling in it. But what about on the day, getting to work? Does anyone here have any idea at all of how to drive in snowy conditions? The roads would be littered with bumper to bumper accidents and people would be skidding off the road left right and centre.
Our infrastructure would simply not cope and Malta would grind to an absolute halt. Public transport would be grounded and people would struggle in getting to work. In all likelihood, Malta will be spared, barring a freakish downfall.
It really does look like the weather is changing. Australia has gone from barren droughts to flooding in the summer. The UK has gone from balmy summers to Frigid winters and Central Europe just seems to get colder and colder every year in the winter. And here, snow? There has been the odd occasion, but never talk of a proper downfall; at least not in the not so distant past – barring a heavy ice storm.
Whether climate change is a myth or not, is irrelevant. No one can deny that something funny is happening up there. Something is out of sync. Forget the Mayan calendars for a second – ice sheets the size of US states are breaking off at different ends of the globe, as we speak. Winter on the Continent is getting colder and colder, while the summers just seem to get more blisteringly hot or humid.
That aside, we go back to the prediction of snow – let us just hope that it’s not a proper covering, else the island might go into disaster mode! We only have to think of the traffic when it rains, let alone snows.
