The past weekend saw the Valletta Subbuteo Club competing in the Major of Mons.
The team event took place on Saturday where the citizens competed against 45 other teams from all over Europe.
In the group stage, Valletta beat the world’s number 1 team TFC Mattersburg of Austria 3-1 and SC Flanders of Belgium 3-0.
In the next round they were paired up against ASD Master San Remo of Italy whom they beat 3-0 to make it to the quarterfinals against SC Fiamme Azzurre CM of Italy which they also won.
In the semifinal, they faced a very tough challenge but their opponents, SC Charleroi of Belgium, were too good on the day for our boys which they lost with a close score of 2-1.
On Sunday it was time for the Open competition where all of our players took part.
In the first round all our players advanced to the Round of 32 with the exception of Vince Mifsud who was knocked out in the barrage.
In the round of 32, most of our players faced a tough and challenging time were Mario Camilleri played against world number 1 Carlos Flores which saw the Valletta player lose the match 4-0.
On the other hand, Derek Conti, Samuel Bartolo and Chris Thomas all registered a win and moved on to the next round.
In the last 16, Derek Conti and Samuel Bartolo played each other with the Valletta captain being victorious with a score of 1-0 while Chris Thomas beat Belgium’s Justin Leroy 4-3.
In the quarterfinal, Derek Conti faced Portugal’s Sergio Louriero where, till full time, they were drawing 4-4.
The game went to sudden death where the Portuguese player scored and knocked out the Valletta captain 5-4. Chris Thomas, on the other hand, had a difficult time in containing Austria’s Wolfgang Leitner who won 3-0.
