Big Contractors

Malta Independent Wednesday, 15 February 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

It is unfair for Michael Briguglio to say that the Sliema local council was not doing its job.  Calling Sliema “a case study of a failed local council” is uncalled for and we will see what the new council can do once it is elected.

The council cannot stop developers when a Mepa permit has been issued.  So saying that the big contractors are running Sliema is incorrect, as the council did its best to stop dodgy development. If you, as a councillor, can stop these developers, good luck to you -  development means progress.

A lot of work was done by the last council and the 84 meetings in one year show how much work was done.

Unfortunately several things have been shelved and perhaps AD can clear these when elected next March. I wish you good luck with that.

The main problem in Sliema is the daily closure of streets – development areas are not checked by authorities. This is not in the remit of the council’s work.

Another problem that  Sliema faces, is that there is no law enforcement. It is no use having laws in this country, when everyone does what he likes.  John Bundy’s song is just right: ‘A Mickey Mouse country’.

Councillors have an allowance of €100 monthly less tax, you can rest assured that this is not enough to cover expenses.
