The name Hubert Camilleri and his Formula Chevron B43 are synonymous with hillclimbs in Malta, the motorsport event which is reaching new heights in popularity both locally and abroad.
Hubert has been racing for the past 15 years and won 12 titles so far. He had bought the Chevron locally from Teddy Aquilina in the 90s which was already successful at that time.
The Chevron went through extensive modification throughout the years mainly the transformation of its power plant, to the mighty Cosworth YBengine in aspirated form.
Many friends, supporters and sponsors have joined Hubert along his addiction for perfection and he has thanked them all after another highly successful year in 2011.
Robert Cauchi, of MC Laren Garage, friend and mechanic, has supervised and done most of the modifications along with Josan Borg of Hiper Developments/ Dyno Tuner and Maurice Caruana, well known engineer, another friend of Hubert’s and main sponsor of Avon tyres. Vodafone were the sponsors for a number of years and recently, Got to Be Glued and Virtu Ferries wer einstrumental in the successful races won in Sicily at Etna in 2008/9.
His family played an important part of this adventure, supporting him and joining him as part of his team as did his many friends and supporters.
Last year the season was very competitive with a few young guns old enough to be Hubert’s sons with more recent formulas which challenged the Chevron until the last race in Gnejna which Hubert won convincingly to secure his 12th title in the Island Car Club Championship.
Out of a total of eight events, Hubert managed four overall first positions, second in three Hill Climbs and one third place and one DNF.
Hubert is now thinking about giving the up and coming drivers some space and give more time to his children Kurt and Keith who will start competing and follow in their father’s footsteps.
Hubert’s racing days are not over yet as he wishes to compete in a full championship abroad, mainly in Sicily, and will also be doing some racing in the UK.
He will still be driving locally in his Chevron which shall be returning to his favourite red colour but only in the main events and more for leisure and the passion which has made him the 12th champion of the ICC hillclimbs.
