Eight-year-old Jean Sammut finished second in the third round of the Honda Clubman Bayford Meadows 2012 MSA Winter Championship.
Sammut was one of the youngest drivers in a grid of 22 drivers aged eight to 13 and showed his intent early on when he qualified second. Sammut took the lead in the second lap of Heat 1 and, despite strong pressure from his pursuers, Sammut kept his cool to lead all the way and win the 8-lap Heat, with the top three drivers covered by less than a second.
In Heat 2, Sammut started on pole, led the field in first but was overtaken half way through the race, starting the final lap in third place.
In a thrilling last lap, Sammut pulled off a stunning move to finish Heat 2 in second.
These results earned Sammut pole for the 12-lap final. The Maltese boy was involved in a race long battle, consistently swapping the lead with two other drivers. Sammut took the lead going into the final lap, before being overtaken and racing to the finish line in second, just 0.07 seconds off first and with fastest lap in the final.
This result follows an impressive performance the previous weekend at Buckmore Park where Sammut raced in the Honda Clubman MSA winter series.
Qualifying second, Sammut followed this with second and first place finishes in the pre-
finals. These results gave him pole for the final and he led the field in first looking good for a win. Unfortunately Sammut had to retire early in the race due to a mechanical
failure.
Sammut races with the Ambition Motorsport Team and is regarded as one of the up-and-coming racing drivers in the UK. He has been racing successfully in karts since the age of
six and has been voted Maltese 2011 Junior Driver of the Year.
In addition to a number of club events, Sammut will also be competing in the 2012 British Super 1 Honda Cadet Championship, racing in tracks in Scotland, Wales, North and Southern England. These races will also be shown on Motors TV.
