Malta Independent Wednesday, 7 March 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

White Hart 2

Young Stars 5

Umpires: Josef Antonelli, Paul Brincat

For the second game in a row, White Hart took an early lead and after falling behind came close to equalising before being overwhelmed towards the end of the match.

They went ahead in the 12th minute through Mark Zahra and held their own until the 21st minute when Young Stars drew level, Mark Camilleri scoring as a result of a penalty corner action.

The game ebbed and flowed until a period of sustained pressure by Young Stars saw them win a series of penalty corners.

This produced a shot that hit  the post and two goals through Mark Camilleri in the 31st minute and Edward Hughes two minutes later, giving Young Stars a 3-1 lead at half time.

White Hart reacted in the second half and reduced the arrears in the 47th minute when Karl Tua netted their second goal, but Mark Camilleri scored two more goals for Young Stars in the 55th and 59th minute from two penalty corners taking his tally to four and his team’s to five.

Conceding 12 penalty corners definitely contributed to White Hart losing the match by a wide margin.

Qormi 3

Hotsticks 0

Umpires: Luke Busuttil Leaver, Edward Hughes

A quiet start to the game until the 11th minute when Hotsticks won the first penalty corner of the game.

They failed to capitalise allowing Qormi to counter attack immediately and Julian Zahra shot Qormi ahead in the 12th minute.

A period of midfield play followed and although Qormi won three penalty corners before half time, the score remained unchanged.

Hotsticks won two short corners early in the second half but could not breach Qormi’s defences and in the 42nd minute Jonathan Borg netted Qormi’s second.

Despite Hotsticks’ efforts, Qormi went further ahead in the 59th minute when Jonathan Borg scored his second and his team’s third as a result of a penalty corner action.

Qormi controlled the game from then on although Hotsticks kept trying to reduce the arrears till the end.
