Syria’s Sham and Malta’s inexistent referendum

Malta Independent Tuesday, 13 March 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

I wonder how much extra it would have been to hold a referendum together with the local council elections on 10 March to get the people’s endorsement or otherwise for signing into law the EU-mandated shackling law relating to the budget. When the Maltese were consulted in a referendum on Malta’s accession to the EU, there was no two-thirds in favour and therefore those who maintained that the pro-EU lobby had not won were not altogether wrong. For joining the EU is tantamount to losing our independence and republican status, for the paltry voting percentage at EU level makes us an insignificant non-entity.

As it is, both sides are taking the people for granted and passing on more power to Brussels and hardly a lone heavyweight voice or two are heard voicing same qualms.
