Melita 3

Melita went temporarily on top of the standings for the first time this season with an easy victory of Dingli Swallows. Melita can be overtaken again today if Rabat beat St. Andrew’s in today’s first match.

The match was a one way traffic affair as Melita made sure with two quick goals inside the first five minutes. Melita were in a class of their own as they delighted the few spectators present with some breath taking football. Martin Gregory’s boys were in splendid form yesterday as they gave a five star performance with opponents Dingli having nothing to offer against such a show.

Melita had a dream start scoring two goals inside the first five minutes of the match. On four minutes from a Jovan Vukanic corner, Kane Micallef fired the ball home from the edge of the area.

Barely 40 seconds later, Melita were two ahead when a Kane Micallef corner from the other side was headed beautifully home by Manuel Sierra Camacho. Dingli tried to recover with a Porcari run, but Melita were all over their opponents.

On 22 minutes Melita scored a third when Julian Galea passed towards Matthew Borg whose shot was partially deflected by goalkeeper Farrugia with the ball finishing in the net despite Jonathan Pace’s desperate attempt to clear the ball off the goal line.

Dingli could not find a way to crawl back in the match and Melita had a Baldacchino goal disallowed, with the same player denied by a brilliant Jeffrey Farrugia save.

Melita’s second half performance was less intense as they easily administered their three-goal advantage. However in some flashes they still distinguished themselves with some very well executed moves.

Dingli’s best chance for a consolation goal came from on of their best players Leontiev Konda but his shot went inches wide.

In stoppage time Melita missed a penalty from Kane Micallef.
