After suffering their first defeat of the season at the hands of Gudja in their last outing, Gzira returned to winning ways when they won their duel against Siggiewi with the comfortable score of 5-0.

They thus kept hold of their place at the summit of the standings with 48 points, followed closely by Mellieha with 40 points.

Gzira opened the scoring 28 minutes into the match, with a lovely long-distance drive by Louis Fernando Borges Correla de Silva.

They doubled their lead six minutes later, when Correla de Silva’s effort was blocked by the goalkeeper, but from the rebound Ryan Deguara tapped the ball at the back of the net.

Gzira increased their lead again on 65 minutes with Ryan Deguara’s effort from outside the area, and four minutes later with Correla de Silva’s low shot on a cross by Pace.

The Maroons sealed the match 15 minutes from time, when after a good run by Simon Shead, he went past goalkeeper Vella and hit home between the uncustoded posts.

Zurrieq waited till the last 20 minutes of their encounter with Attard to score three goals ensuring their victory, thus going three points clear above the same Attard and Luqa at the bottom-end of the standings. They have temporarily avoided relegation.

The first half saw very little action on both sides, with the best opportunity coming Zurrieq’s way three minutes before the break, when from a freekick by Briffa, Azzopardi;s first timer went inches wide.

Zurrieq opened the scoring on 70 minutes, when after a good run along the right flank, Zvezden Vukovic beat Ubberden with a low shot form an acute angle.

Nine minutes later, Attard’s Daniel Gauci was sent off for a nasty foul on Azzopardi in the area, and Stephen Azzopardi hit home from the ensuing penalty.

Zurrieq sealed the match three minutes from stoppage time, when Camilleri tried his luck from the middle of the pitch, with Ubberden blocking the shot temporarily, and eventually it was Stephen Azzopardi who tapped the ball home.

Anywanna scored a brace in Zebbug’s second consecutive victory when the Greens beat Luqa SA 3-0. Zebbug are now among the frontrunners, following runaway leaders Pembroke.

For Luqa it was another disappointing performance as they slumped to their third consecutive defeat, failing to score a goal in these last three outings.

ebbug took an early lead when on 12 minutes Alegbe was floored by Gordon Failla and from the resultant penalty Anywanna put Zebbug Rangers ahead.

Nine minutes into the second half Luqa’s Lee Baldacchino had a very good run but his shot went inches wide. Three minutes later, Luqa again on the attack with Baldacchino testing goalkeeper Debono after a precise pass by Gordon Failla.

Fifteen minutes from time Zebbug doubled the score when Gordon Mallia passed to Jeremy Agius whose effort from the edge of the area finished at the back of the net.

Two minutes from time Zebbug put the issue beyond doubt when veteran Malcolm Tirchett, who came in as a substitute, passed towards Anywanna who beat the helpless Ellul for Zebbug’s third and final goal.

Senglea A 2

High flying Gharghur were stunned by bottom of the table Senglea who managed a 2-2 draw. Gharghur were coming from a three game winning streak, while on the other hand Senglea were still smarting from the 2-6 drubbing against Kirkop.

Gharghur dictated matters in the first part and forged ahead on 27 minutes when Benjamin Perry Acton beat Bartolo. Nine minutes later Senglea were back on level terms when Emeka shot home a good Degiorgio cross.

Just before the break Gharghur went close when Curmi passed to Iliev whose shot skimmed the base of the upright.

Midway through the second half Gharghur went ahead when Grozev headed home a Clint Farrugia cross. But Senglea were not to be denied and they drew level ten minutes later when Emeka obtained his brace when he headed home a Rababah corner.

St Venera and San Gwann shared the points when as the match between the two teams ended 1-1.

The first half lacked action, but the second proved to be better with more actions. With this point St Venera moved a step closer to save their status in the second division after they are 10 points above the drop zone.

The first half although it wasn’t mediocre was quiet with no real actions towards the posts.

San Gwann took the lead on the 47th minute when Shawn Vella recieved a good ball and after a good control beat Cuschieri with a low shot.

St Venera made a good reaction and managed to even the result when Dylan Mercieca converted from the spot on the 50th minute.

San Gwann tried to regain their lead when they missed a chance on the 63rd minute when Shawn Vella shot off target from outside the box.

San Gwann had a golden chance on the 89th minute when a shot from Chris Pace was saved by Cuschieri but Sell’s rebound was turned into a corner by the same Cuschieri to save a point for his team.

Msida St Joseph 3

Msida St Joseph won three important points when they beat Kirkop United 3-1 in a match that the result may not reflect the game as Kirkop had their moments where they shared the game with their opponents.

With this win Msida now are in a more comfortable position and they are eight points above the drop zone.

Msida took the lead on the 10th minute when from a Refalo cross, keeper Carmelo Caruana didn’t control the ball and from the rebound Fernando de Andrade put in an empty net.

On the 25th minute a shot from outside the box by Christopher Farrugia was saved by Agius.

Kirkop tried to even the score on the 31st minute when a free-kick was taken by Cumbo but it was saved by Agius. Msida scored the second goal against the run of play when it was again Fernando de Andrade who advanced and although between two defenders managed to beat Caruana.

Kirkop started the second half very good but it was again against the run of play that Msida scored and killed the game when on the 61st minute Fernando de Andrade had a shot that was deflected that beat Caruana.

Kirkop were reduced to 10 men after thet had player/coach Albert Busuttil sent-off for some remarks. Kirkop scored a consolation goal on the 80th minute when from a free-kick by Stankovic, Stilyan Petrov headed past Agius.
