A woman in the UK has raised a storm that has travelled across the continents and flown through cyber space after penning an article, cursing her own ‘beauty’ in the Daily Mail.

The woman in question is a 40-something year old called Samantha Brick. By looking at her, you can tell that she stays in shape and has aged well. But her contribution in the Daily Mail is nothing short of cringe-worthy.

She says that throughout her life, people have sent champagne to her table, people have given her impromptu bunches of flowers and that random strangers have picked up her bills in restaurants. She goes on to write that throughout her life, doors have been opened for her “literally”, but others have been slammed shut by jealous women.

In reams and reams of self gratifying and self aggrandizing text, this woman continues to rob herself of any possible vestiges of sympathy by insulting both sexes. The way she sees herself is an affront to both men and women, the former portrayed as drooling canines and the later portrayed as jealous felines.

Mrs Brick says: “I’m tall, slim, blonde and, so I’m often told, a good-looking woman. I know how lucky I am. But there are downsides to being pretty — the main one being that other women hate me for no other reason than my lovely looks.”

She says she is not smug or a flirt, yet over the years she has been dropped by countless friends who felt threatened if she was merely in the presence of their other halves. “If their partners dared to actually talk to me, a sudden chill would descend on the room,” she said.

This is not even an issue of sex – as in male or female. There are plenty of attractive men and women on this earth and there are plenty of them that know it. There are also those who do not know it.

The real issue at stake here is that no one, absolutely no one, likes a bragger – much less so when it is about personal appearance. It is perfectly acceptable to do your best, work out and pay attention to your appearance. It is also perfectly acceptable for any individual to know that they are looking good and carry themselves with confidence. What is not acceptable is for a person, good looking or not, to brag about it in people’s faces and write reams of copy in a national newspaper! Many columnists have attacked Mrs Brick and many have come to the same conclusion as we have – beauty really is in the eye of the beholder and in this particular case, it really is only skin deep.
