Work Starts on SmartCity Malta lagoon

Malta Independent Sunday, 15 April 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

Construction on SmartCity Malta’s lagoon district is swiftly moving ahead. Scheduled for completion by the end of the year, it will feature the central water body incorporating the surroundings of open public spaces and urban destinations.

The centrepiece of the development is comprised of a reinforced basin structure, forming the lagoon body. A site-wide rainwater-harvesting tank will also be constructed underneath the basin structure, which aggregates the entire development’s storm water run-off from roads and hard landscaped areas. The harvested rainwater will be recycled and used for fire fighting, irrigation and wastewater flushing purposes within and beyond built structures.

Excavation work for these structures have been completed and reinforced structural work will commence shortly.

On a building scale, SCM02, SCM03, SCM04 and SCM05 are gearing up steadily towards structural completion. SCM02 and SCM03 – both multi-storey office buildings, have reached the last floor. The superstructure of retail buildings SCM04 and SCM05, collectively forming three storeys of exclusive retail and food and beverage outlets, are also nearing completion.

Erection of the building façades, interior finishing and the installation of building services are expected to start imminently upon awarding the selected contractors. Once completed, Phase 2 buildings will add 18,000sq.m of mixed-use office and commercial space to SmartCity Malta

Last month, SmartCity made a direct investment of €35 million in SmartCity Malta, which now brings the company’s capital to €66 million, confirming the company’s commitment to the Malta project. On completion of this second phase, the lagoon area and retail buildings will provide a perfect setting with the Mediterranean Sea as a magnificent backdrop to be enjoyed by all those who visit.
