Save St Julian’s

Malta Independent Sunday, 15 April 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

It seems it is now St Julian’s turn to come within the line of fire of a shower of large construction projects which are going to prove to be the end of this picturesque town, once a typical fishing village.

I fail to understand the reasoning and planning behind destroying the little heritage that this small island still enjoys. There is absolutely no hope for Sliema, now a concentration of concrete and stone buildings that fight between themselves in order to try and grab some air. But can there still be hope for St Julian’s?

As a resident of St Julian’s, it is very disappointing and disheartening to see that none of the authorities involved seem to have given any thought to the damage which these projects, within 500 metres of each other, are going to have on our quality of life. Has anyone even thought of the increased pollution, noise, traffic and health hazards? Have the necessary studies been carried out? Or do the Maltese people no longer count when it comes to money-making construction contracts?

Why continue to build huge blocks, which this little town really doesn’t need, when there are so many vacant apartments in St Julian’s that are up for sale?

I sincerely hope that the decision-makers involved will for once put their financial gains aside and take decisions based on correct environmental studies.

But am I dreaming here?
