It is very encouraging to note the work-in-progress on the 400-year-old Wignacourt Fountain (1615) following my appeals to the authorities to intervene and save this historic fountain from being reduced to ruins.
The historic Wignacourt Fountain in St Philip Garden in Floriana, which was originally located on Palace Square, Valletta, was the first fountain erected after the building of the Wignacourt aqueduct; it was unveiled at Eastertide on 21 April 1615. This beautiful and historic fountain was moved by the British military to St Philip Garden, as they wanted to use Palace Square for military parades.
The Wignacourt Fountain has a large circular basin with three superimposed shell shaped basins, each one smaller than the one below it, supported on a pedestal with four dolphins with upturned tails, or rather what is still left of them.
I am looking forward to seeing the necessary restoration work completed and this beautiful and historic fountain restored to its former glory.
May I take this opportunity to thank all those who in one way or another extended their support
Well done to all concerned.
