An Amnesiac PM

Malta Independent Wednesday, 18 April 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

Francesca Vella reported the Prime Minister saying that the Nationalist Party does not keep its meetings secret (The Malta Independent, 16 April).

The PM obviously suffers from amnesia, or is trying to deceive the country. Malta never knew, until the late PN deputy leader Guido de Marco told us decades later, that when Aldo Moro was persuaded by Dom Mintoff to help Malta financially, many in the PN leadership, such as Eddie Fenech Adami, and Prof. de Marco himself, and Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, among others, went to Italy to try to convince the Italian PM to stop giving aid to Malta.

It was Prof. de Marco who revealed this, many, many years later. The PN had never before revealed that secret trip to Rome to undermine the legitimate Maltese government’s efforts to obtain aid for Malta. And these people in the PN called themselves ‘Nationalists’.

Dr Gonzi went further in his comments. He told Dr Muscat not to ruin Malta’s name abroad.

Dr Gonzi does suffer from amnesia.

It is the PN that harmed Malta abroad, in Opposition. We all remember the ridicule the PN heaped on Gaddafi’s Libya though the late Libyan dictator was helping Malta with cheap oil. That is the thanks the Libyans got from the PN for their generosity – ridicule.

Though, to be fair, the time came when the PN, this time in government, bowed obsequiously to the tyrant in the desert.
