The world schools cross country championships were recently held at Marsa and the event was a successful one.

I was surprised, however, by the lack of promotion and attention given by the media for such an event.

No fewer than 380 athletes between the ages of 14 and 17 years from 23 countries worldwide covering four continents took part in this event.

In my opinion, this would have been a golden opportunity for our authorities to further promote recognition of future promising Maltese athletes while at the same time serving to promote sports appreciation within our schools.  

It was also sad to note that no school representatives or pupils were present during the event.  It is after all events like these which kindle the appetite for sports.

In the future, I would propose that more direct representation be given by our sports ministry who would also liaise with our education authorities to have representatives present at such an event.

The various local sports authorities are to be congratulated on their organisation throughout and specifically for the colourful eventful Friendship relay along the streets of Birgu, which promoted fun, friendship and universal fairplay in a historical setting.

The Ministry of Tourism could have capitalised on such an event and it was unfortunate that no one from these entities were present for the opening/closing ceremony or presentation.
