Mountain Bike: Gerard Said Triumphs at Chadwick Lakes

Malta Independent Friday, 20 April 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The cross country national points series resumed with the fourth round at Chadwick Lakes.

Gerard Said had a remarkable day clinching a surprise win after an early attack which left current NPS leader Etienne Bonello unable to respond. The race at Chadwick Lakes offered a great challenge due to its 1 km climb on loose soil and clay together with its technical downhill and single tracks.

Some prominent riders opted out of this challenge. The race rolled smoothly from the start line until the riders reached the first climb of the day.

Said surprised everyone with an early attack which put NPS leader Etienne Bonello in trouble.

Clearly not on his best form - still recovering from the Tour ta’ Malta - Bonello struggled to match Said’s effort. The latter was clearly on a good day as he dug deep to keep his advantage through the remaining laps to finish the race in 38:55 seconds.

Bonello had to settle in second spot one minute later with Joseph Formosa in third place.

Round five of the National Points series will be held  this Sunday at Gudja which will be organised by Agones Cycling Club.
