Melita 5
Zejtun C 0
Melita moved closer to promotion yesterday when they demolished ten-man Zejtun scoring five goals in the first 45 minutes. Melita were in a class of their own yesterday with Kane Micallef, Luke Micallef and Julian Galea creating havoc in the Zejtun defence whenever they got possession of the ball.
The match was a one way traffic affair with Melita putting their minds at rest with two goals inside the first 14 minutes. Zejtun lost Charlo Magro half way through the first half when he was sent off for elbowing an opponent, and Melita continued to attack and score at will against a demotivated and sorry lot.
On nine minutes Melita took the lead when Vukanic crossed towards Julian Galea who headed towards Luke Micallef who easily slotted the ball home from close range. Melita continued to pile up the pressure and they doubled the score on 14 minutes.
Kane Micallef’s short freekick found Sierra Camacho completely unmarked on the edge of the area and the Melita defender fired a scorcher that finished in the top corner of the net for a spectacular goal.
On 19 minutes Melita missed another golden opportunity when Kane Micallef’s shot missed the upright by a whisker. On 22 minutes Zejtun were reduced to 10 men when Charlo Magro elbowed Julian Galea and referee Arciola gave him the marching orders. Seven minutes later, Zejtun had their only attempt of the first half through a Ryan Cauchi long range effort.
On 34 minutes, the same Cauchi almost committed an own goal in an attempt to clear and from the resultant corner, Farrugia saved Karl Vella Petroni’s header and from the rebound Julian Galea slotted the ball home.
Three minutes from the break Kane Micallef crowned a great performance when he fired home from the edge of the area, and a minute later George Gribbon headed the fifth goal for Melita when he finished a Luke Micallef freekick.
The second period was less intense. Melita continued to dominate but were not sharp in front of goal and were unable to add to their already massive goal tally.
