Local champions Valletta, confirmed for a second consecutive time last weekend, will be continuing with the celebrations this afternoon at the Ta’ Qali National Stadium when they are to face eternal rivals Floriana, still involved in the race for third place with Birkirkara FC.
With Valletta assured of the title, the match is of more interest to the Greens who will be seeking a victory, in the knowledge that the Stripes might overtake them tomorrow if they beat Sliema Wanderers, now having no more interest in the proceedings.
A victory will certainly keep them ahead of the Stripes. Not only: it will look like an honour for them to lower their rivals’ colours soon after assuring themselves of the title.
Only a point separates the Greens and the Stripes with just two matches to go, but the decision may go on till the very last day of the competition.
Actually, the third place has no real bearing on the standings, as the two teams are already assured of a berth in next season’s UEFA Europa League.
In the last round next weekend, Floriana will be facing Sliema while Birkirkara have to face Balzan Youths.
Meanwhile, in the Relegation battle, following Mqabba’s defeat yesterday, Hamrun are safe while Tarxien need only a point from today’s match to ascertain themselves of yet another season, at least, in the Premier League.
