Gharghur 2

In the match of the week Gudja United grabbed three important points when they beat Gharghur with a dramatic goal in the 92nd minute.

Leslie Burke’s team deserved to win as they were the better team. After they found themselves a goal down, they took control of the game while Gharghur only had some flashes in the game.

Gharghur took the lead in their real first attempt when on the 15th minute Chris Vella buried past Xerxen with a great shot from outside the box that gave no chance to the Gudja keeper.

Gudja made a quick reaction and almost scored when on the 23rd minute from a free-kick by William Camenzuli, Keith Bonello’s effort finished off target.

Gudja levelled the score on the 27th minute when Peter Paul Sammut received a good ball and after advancing with the ball managed to beat Zarb with a low shot.

Gudja were again close when it was Peter Paul Sammut was again dangerous but this time Zarb saved his shot. On the 33rd minute from a George Cutajar corner, Trevor Thomas’s header was saved by Zarb.

Gudja took the lead two minutes later when youngster Peter Paul Sammut recieved a good ball from the left flank and after cutting to the box bear Zarb with another low shot to record his 10th goal of the season.

Gudja almost built a two-goal cushion five minutes later when a shot from outside the box by Elton Bugeja was again saved from Zarb. In the stoppage time Gharghur treathened the posts as Trayo Grozev had a a shot from outside the box but Xerxen saved easily.

On the 47th minute a powerful shot from Grozev was saved by Xerxen. Gharghur were given a penalty on the 58th minute when scorer Chris Vella was fouled into the penalty area with referee Andre Arciola pointing to the dreaded spot. Trayo Grozev made no mistake.

On the half hour mark Gharghur alomst took the lead after a good personal action from Grozev finished with a shot but found Xerxen who turned into a corner with his feet.

But from the same corner, Gudja almost scored as Gharghur lost the ball and they caught the defence on one leg but after Trevor Thomas came face to face with Zarb, he passed to Keith Bonello but failed to conclude in an empty net after he fell on the ball.

Gudja scored the winning goal on the 92nd minute when captain William Camenzuli beat Zarb with a left-foot shot from outside the penalty area.

The Zebbug Rangers’ capabilities came to the fore in the match against Gzira who from kick off, continuously attacked and pressurised their oppontents. However Gzira, now promoted to the First Division were not ready to suffer a loss and the match ended in a draw.

An interesting action took place on the 9th minute when the Rangers’ Jeremy Agius crossed towards Aaron Agius, back to Jeremy Agius who concluded with a low shot which ended a few centimetres wide.

On the 21st, Simon Shead’s low angled shot hit the pole.

Zebbug Rangers took the lead on the 41st minute when Sonyo Peireira De Mata crossed towards Malcolm Tirchett, who ran past a Gzira defender and beat goalkeeper Kyle Gerada with a low shot.

Gzira equalised on the 48th minute when Yanis Tonna beat the Zebbug defenders and goalkeeper James Mercieca with a header, thus putting to an end the Rangers’ hope of making part of the top two teams on the Second Division table.

Attard kept their hopes to avoid relegation alive when they beat San Gwann 3-1. With this win, they are now two points adrift of Siggiewi with only one game to spare, with their last game being against champions Gzira United.

On the other hand San Gwann looked demotivated as Michael Molzahn’s team don’t have a chance to climb places in the table.

Attard took only six minutes to take the lead when youngster Dimcho Traykov beat Carbonaro with a good shot.

San Gwann didn’t make a quick reaction and Dimcho Traykov scored his second goal to record his sixth of the season and built a two-goal cushion for his team.

The match had a slow rythm as Attard controlled without any major difficulties until young forward Dimcho Traykov scored his hat-trick on the 85th minute. San Gwann managed to score a consolation goal thanks to their top scorer Shaun Vella two minutes from time.

Luqa find themselves at the bottom on the Second Division table after suffering another loss in the encounter with St Venera Lightnings.

No goals were scored during the first half which was rather boring.

St Venera missed a good opportunity to open the scoring on the 62nd minute when Leandro Ferreira Guglielmetti’s nice shot hit the left post and again less than a minute later when Gerald Ancilleri’s rising shot hit the crossbar and ended high.

However, the Lightnings were not discouraged and succeeded on the 70th minute when Dylan Mercieca blasted past Luqa’s goalkeeper Jeremy Gatt from a notable distance.

Lee Baldacchino’s attempt for Luqa on the 85th minute was saved by St Venera’s goalkeeper Elvin Attard.

St Venera sealed the win when Dylan Mercieca’s low and angled shot in the direction of the net, found Leandro Ferreira Guglielmetti who fired home an angled shot three minutes from time.

Luqa St Andrews have been relegated to the Third Division.
