Attard 0
Gzira U 2
Champions Gzira United celebrated in style as they beat Attard 2-0 in a match they dominated especially after their first goal. This result also meant that Attard were relegated to third Division football next season.
Gzira surely deserved to clinch promotion as they were the better team through-out the league. They acquired the services of several players who used to play in the Premier Division including Simon Agius, Kevin Cassar, Sharlon Pace, who was instrumental, Ryan Deguara and Anthony Ewurum. Also they were consistent from start to finish with only two defeats and only 16 goals conceded from 26 games which proves their domination.
The first action to note came on the 10th minute when a free-kick from Alhino fininshed over the bar. Although Gzira held the initiative, they couldn’t penetrate the Attard defence and play was confused in midfield.
On the 26th minute a low shot from a difficult angle by Traykov was saved easily by Agius. On the 34th minute Gzira were awarded a penalty when from a good through ball by Alhino, Owen Tabone fouled Tonna in the box. From the penalty spot Yanis Tonna converted.
Gzira went close to the second goal two minutes later when Tonna passed to Ewurum who fired a shot but found Ubberden ready to turn the shot into a corner. On the 37th minute a shot from Kevin Cassar finished over the bar. In stoppage time a shot from Andrew Agius finished off target.
On the 61st minute Shead passed to Ewurum but after he advanced, his low shot finished a bit wide.
Gzira doubled their lead on the 67th minute when Yanis Tonna took advantage of an indecision from Owen Tabone to smash into the net amongst the joyful celebrations from the Gzira fans who attended in a large number.
Gzira went close to scoring a third goal on the 70th minute when a good run by Ryan Deguara finished with a shot that was saved by Ubberden.
Attard went close to score the consolation goal when from a free-kick by Agius, Gerada saved partially with his legs, and from the rebound came Kurt Zahra but Gerada managed to save the second attempt.
