The second second semifinal is to be played this evening at the National Stadium, Ta’ Qali, when Hibernians face Hamrun Spartans (kick-off 7.30pm).

The Paolites, runners-up to Valletta in the Premier League, are firm favourites to emerge winners to assure themselves of a berth in the final of the second major honour in Maltese football.

After the termination of Mark Miller’s contract (the latter will be joining Valletta next season), the team will now be in the hands of Richard Mercieca and Ndubisi Chukunyere. And it is still to be seen whether such a change will affect the players’ performance.

The change is not expected to be only at the helm. In fact, the coaching duo will have to reshuffle the team that did so well in lowering Valletta’s colours for a second time this season last week. Three players – Bjorn Kristensen, Edison Luis dos Santos and Clayton Failla – will be missing this evening’s game as they are all suspended.

Still, Hibernians should remain hot favourites to beat the Spartans who will be doing their utmost to upset the Paolites by taking advantage of the favourable situation.

Stefan Sultana’s boys have had a very disappointing season and it was only in the final matches that they managed to save their status among the elite.

There is no doubt that Hamrun will have to be at their very best behavior if they are entertaining hopes of toppling Hibernians.

The winners of this evening’s clash will be facing surprise finalists Qormi in next Sunday’s final at the Ta’ Qali National Stadium.
