The Malta Weightlifting Association organised the Malta Open Championships a few days ago.

The ‘Under 11 Years’ category was dominated by Rylee Borg and Blake Vassallo. It must be noted that in this category athletes are not assessed on the amount of weight lifted but rather on the quality of their technique.

The ‘Under 14’ category was won by Emmersin Bugeja with 129 points followed by Malcolm Camilleri with 107 points and Kirstin Coleiro with 106 points.

Nicole Gatt won the Youths female category with 134 points, Marilyn Grech won the Seniors with 100 points while the overall female title went to Vicki Kerr with 183 points.

The Juniors was dominated by Rodmar Pulis who not only won the category with 274 points but also managed to break four national records when he lifted 120Kgs, than he topped that lift with 123Kg.

Unfortunately he failed in his third attempt with 125Kg. His other two records were on the 215Kg total and then managing to top that with 218Kg for his fourth record.

The Seniors’ category was won by Noel Coleiro with 274 points followed by Matthew Muscat Inglott with 263 points and Clint Grech with 253 points.

There was a very tough competition for the title of Overall male lifter. Coleiro managed to clinch this prestigious title with just 0.3 of a point over Pulis.

The competition was run by Alfred Ellul Mercer, assisted by technical officials Simon Brincat, Gordon Cachia, Ramona Borg, Andrea Caruana, David Saliba, Stephen Borg and Gayle Caruana.

This competition was made possible with the assistance of the ‘Kunsill Malti ghall-isport’.
