The Teatru tal-Opra Aurora proudly presents world-renowned soprano Maria Guleghina, in the title role in Puccini’s final 3-act masterpiece Turandot on 13 October.

Currently deemed as the top-Turandot of the moment, the Ukrainian-born soprano is really and truly coming to the Aurora Theatre in Gozo from New York’s Metropolitan. Guleghina is set to leave New York’s chief opera house where she would be performing the same role until a week before, to come to Malta (Gozo) for the single performance of Turandot at the Aurora, and return to the METOpera to continue her season thereafter. She will be gracing and honouring not only the Gozitan stage, but also the Maltese world of opera in general with her fame and stardom. The Maltese opera audience is thus lucky to be able to follow such a big opera-name locally.

Guleghina has been appearing at the Metropolitan since 1990, three years after her international debut at La Scala, opposite the great Luciano Pavarotti. Since November 2009 she has been starring at Turandot in Franco Zeffirelli’s breathtaking production alongside tenors Marco Berti and Marcello Giordani at the gold-curtained lavish Metropolitan Opera House. Guleghina has also performed in major European cities as well as in Japan were she has quite a strong fan base. She is considered by most as one of the leading dramatic sopranos of her generation, largely admired for her warm and rich voice, strong stage presence, and absolute dramatic commitment to her roles on stage.

Turandot is to return to the Aurora after 10 years. Way back in 2002, when the theatre celebrated the 25th anniversary from the first-ever opera in Gozo, the title role was sung by no less-nobler Eva Marton. This time, the theatre celebrating the 35th anniversary with Maria Guleghina – a superlative option that the theatre could have gone for. Colin Attard and Novella Tabili shall be at the helm of the musical and artistic direction respectively.

Tickets for Turandot are now on sale at €80, €70, €60 and €45, with a 10% reduction on tickets paid by the end of June. Tickets can be booked by telephone on 21559452, 21562974 or by email on [email protected].
