The Triathlon Championships of the Small States of Europe came to life in 1997 following intense lobbying by the Malta Triathlon Association among fellow states in Europe. These championships have come a long way and have since been recognised by the International Triathlon Union. Maltese triathletes have, over the years, performed exceptionally well, with athletes such as Maria Mifsud Bonnici, Danica Bonello Spiteri, Michelle Vella Wood, Mark Zammit, Dermot Galea and Keith Galea securing podium finishes for the Maltese contingent. The 2011 Edition, held in Cyprus was won by Mark Zammit who was the first athlete to cross the finish line in 2 hours and six minutes.
The Malta Triathlon Association is currently preparing for the forthcoming edition, scheduled for the weekend of the 7th July and taking place in Luxembourg. The selection of the Maltese contingent will be decided during a selection race will be held on Sunday 17th June. The race, which was designed to mimic the Luxembourg course as much as possible, will see seasoned athletes competing for a coveted place in the National Team representing Malta. Athletes such as Keith Galea and Danica Bonello Spiteri fresh from a number of successful performances abroad will prove to be tough competition to beat.
“Selecting Team Malta for these Games will be tough as there is a lot of talent within the Triathlon family” said Cyprian Dalli, President of the Malta Triathlon Association. “We are confident that a number of athletes within the Triathlon family have the necessary qualities to make the grade and provide Malta with a very good result in Luxembourg”.
The Race which covers an Olympic distance – 1.5kilometre swim, 40kilomtre cycle and 10kilometre run, will take place in Xemxija Bay on Sunday 17th June. Whilst the focus of the race is the selection of Team Malta, the race is open to all triathletes and participation is encouraged. Athletes who have not yet taken part in Triathlon but would like to get a feel for it are being encouraged to take part in a relay team, which will consist of a swimmer, cyclist and runner covering the established distance.
Registration and payment of fees is to take place by not later than Thursday 14th June. More information can be obtained by sending an email to [email protected]
