The only way is up for local champion and SportMalta Award winner Danica Bonello Spiteri after competing the Spanish leg of the Triathlon World Championship Series in Madrid last weekend.

Bonello Spiteri has produced a superb performance to storm away not just in her age-group but the whole field of female triathletes in the age-group race.

It was not an easy task for the Maltese powerhouse as she exited out of the 1.5km swim in second place with a slight deficit from the leader.

Into the 40km bike segment, Bonello Spiteri reeled back the lead of the front runner and used some road racing tactics to drop her rival in a hilly part of the race course.

Despite struggling in the hot and humid weather of the day, Danica carried her advantage into the final 10km run to win her category and the overall female race.

Maltese triathlete Margaret Seguna, who joined Bonello Spiteri in Spain, showed good progress as she finished in eighth place in her category.

Bonello Spiteri’s stellar performance earned her qualification for the International Triathlon Union World Championships which will take place in Auckland, New Zealand, in the end of October.

This was an outstanding performance for Bonello Spiteri who had already shown positive signs after clinching a third place in the age-group European championships in Israel earlier on.

Danica will now turn her focus on the Triathlon for the Small States of Europe which will be held in Luxembourg in July.
