No, George Calleja, my column-long answer to yours (TMID 4/6/12) is not a “eulogy”, but does mention bare facts, which ostriches bury their heads in the ground not to hear.

As you are aware, or perhaps not, we have already had 16 years of wise labour governance - leaving in the coffers 470 million Maltese Lira (EUR1bn) compared to the miserable last 25 years of misgovernance and money-squandering that amounts to more that six billion euro; besides very high taxes and institutionalised corruption, and as always, the breaking of all 20 promises of – xogħol, ġustizzja u libertá’ – is-sisien tal-ġejjieni, (work, justice and freedom - the groundwork for the future).

Yes the people did vote Labour out and the PN into office in 1987. But this was because of the misconception that people had about labour’s progressive ideas, which the pubic was not ready to accept because of hurdles and opposition by the current establishment.

One should consider also that it was time for a government to change hands, for 16 years are maybe too much to be in office, let alone 25 years which has resulted in some 60,000 people on the poverty line and begging once again.

But I must end my last correspondence with quotes by Mr Dom Mintoff who, being an outstanding and acclaimed statesman, envisaged the future when he predicted that, “the labour party in government will educate you, show you how to behave in society, and then you will turn your back on it”.
