Malta Independent Sunday, 17 June 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Organizers of the Targa Florio rally around northern Sicily said a Welsh navigator has been killed in a crash.

Gareth Roberts was teamed yesterday with Irish driver Craig Breen in the second stage of the rally when their Peugeot 207 went off the road about 8 kilometers from the start of the 'Cefalu' leg. A guard rail entered the car on the right side, where Roberts was seated.

Targa Florio said on its Web site that nearby emergency crews responded immediately but that Roberts died instantly. Breen was unhurt.

Organizers immediately ended the rally, which was in its 96th edition. The 170-kilometer Targa Florio this year became part of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, taking the place of Hungary's Mecsek Rally.
