The new season will commence in earnest this evening with the opening match of the Euro Cup – reserved for the clubs representing Malta in the forthcoming UEFA club competitions.

The first batch of matches will be played between today and tomorrow. Today’s opening clash is the clash between city and suburban rivals Floriana and Valletta.

It promises to be a fiery start to the new season even if it is still very early to make assessments.

Such matches, in fact, will only serve the clubs involved to get some match practice ahead of their commitments in the Champions League (Valletta) and the Europa League (Hibernians, Birkirkara and Floriana).

The second match will be played tomorrow between Hibernians and Birkirkara.

The two matches are being played at the Centenary Stadium and kick off at 6.30pm.
