It has been brought to our attention that ONLY people with a mobility disability, more specifically those who have a blue card not available to all disabled people, are to benefit from reduced bus fares when using public transport.
The Down Syndrome Association strongly believes, and requests for this concession to be accessible to all people with a disability. First and foremost, most disabled people are not capable of obtaining a driving licence and therefore unable to have their personal means of transport; also, nearly all of them are nearing, or already are beneath the poverty line! Disabled people are continually dependent on family and friends for all their transportation needs.
Facilitating use of public transport with reduced fares will surely assist people with a disability to become more independent, a topic that at the moment is being discussed exhaustively by various entities.
We urge the authorities concerned to reconsider the current situation, which we find most discriminatory.
