Malta Independent Sunday, 24 June 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Now that Summer has kicked-in, afternoon racing goes into hibernation, with race-meetings henceforth being held in the evening.

The first summer meeting takes place on Tuesday (no Euro 2012 matches scheduled for that day) starting at 6.30pm, with nine trot races (all on a 2,140m distance) and a flat race.

The highlight of the meeting is the VOB Cup Final for Premier class trotters, with five finalists from the Prix de Vincennes and an equal number from the Sette Giugno Cup.

It includes a splendid line-up with participants originating in Denmark, Finland, France and Sweden. These include Prix de Vincennes winner Lady de Vindecy and third placed Milord Barbes, Tazza l-Kbira winner Mig of the Wood, Skyparks Premier class winner Wiss Night Hawk, Sette Giugno Cup runner-up Happiness Photo, Assikura Cup runner-up Count of Life and equally valid finalists Label Chouan, Niky du Donjon, Op Le Cosseen and Skip Dimanche.

The meeting also sees the start of the summer championship which will eventually culminate in finals for each trot class.

The first Premier class race from this championship includes a 16-horse field, with various trotters coming from fine performances, such as Marini du Mont, Lover Boy Index, Veikko Hornline and many others.

We also have an extremely competitive Gold class race from this championship, including horses such as Prix de Cabourg winner Ollico Pellois, Reado November which placed in each of its last three outings, Energy Launcher with six places this season, and many others.

The Class A flat race on the sprint 1,250m distance includes four interesting participants, Mediterranean Derby runner-up Little Anthony, the return of Prince Yarraman after a seven month stop, Nuage de La Tour which placed in its last outing and Irish newcomer Honey Moon.

In these hot summer days, evening racing provides cool entertainment, presenting an opportunity to enjoy our fresh Mediterranean evenings whilst following some exciting high quality races!
