Dangerous Place

Malta Independent Saturday, 30 June 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

I was watching the programme Forċina on Net TV on Sunday 24 June and was quite shocked to see that people, including children, were perched at the top of the Siġġiewi parish church when the statue of St Nicholas was being carried out of the church for the procession.

There were no railings and no other form of protection for the people who were on top of the church throwing confetti onto the statue below. One moment of imbalance or a slight involuntary push could have led to a tragedy.

I believe that the Church authorities should not take things so lightly. They should prevent anyone from being exposed to such danger, and in particular children.

It is thought that fireworks could be the only danger during village feasts; but what I saw last Sunday shows that there are other situations that could lead to a disaster.

I hope that other parishes will realise this and I hope that the Curia will issue instructions to parish priests in this regard.
