“Rumble on the Rock”, an international boxing night which will be held on 17 August, was launched earlier this week by the Malta Boxing Commission.
Included on the card will be a WBF world super middleweight title and a WBF light heavyweight intercontinental title.
Robin Reid will be taking on William Gare for the super middle title and Tony Dodson’s opponent for the light heavyweight title is to be announced shortly.
Maltese professional boxers Edwin Micallef and Clayton Vella will be taking part against professional boxers from the UK in the supporting bouts.
The World Boxing Federation (WBF) is the fifth largest title sanctioning body in the world and the boxing night is fully sanctioned and controlled by the Malta Boxing Commission (MBC) which is the official professional boxing representative in the Maltese Islands.
Robin Reid hails from the UK has a record of 50 bouts of which has won 42 (29 by KO) lost seven (two by KO) and has one draw. He last fought on 28 January 2012 against Daniel Cadman whom he defeated by TKO.
William Gare hails from South Africa. He has a record of 42 bouts he has won 27 (five by KO) lost 15 and has no draws. History will also be made on the same night when Clayton Vella becomes the first Maltese ever to box professionally on a boxing licence issued in Malta.
Although many Maltese living outside of the Islands have boxed professionally and even achieved world fame, such as Charlie “Champagne” Magri and Jeff Fenech, no one has ever entered the pro ring on a Maltese licence. Vella will be taking on an opponent who still has to be announced.
Joining Vella, on the undercard will be Daniel Micallef who fights on a UK licence. Micallef has a record of nine bouts. He has won 4 (one by KO) and lost five, with no draws.
Present for the conference were WBF President Howard Goldberg from South Africa, and WBF European Coordinator Olaf Schroeder (Germany).
“Rumble on the Rock” will be run on international standards. All participants, including officials, are fully licenced professionals and this will be the first local boxing event where the participants will be covered by insurance.
