Basketball - Maltese Girls win bronze in the FIBA European Championship

The Maltese Women’s Basketball National Team yesterday won a bronze medal in the FIPA Cueopean Championships for small countries, beating Scotland 72-52.

This was a well-deserved victory for the squad led by Santino Coppa, who won four out of five matches in this tournament played in Macedonia.

The Maltese contingent only lost the semi-final against Austria last Saturday, when after a good start in the first quarter, they had to condede defeat against the Austrian superb comeback.

Yesterda’ys match was the second one played against Scotland, where the two sides had met in the second match of Group A, where the Maltese side had won the encounter.

The local girls were quite dominant yesterday in practically all the quarters, with the most balanced one being the second which ended 14-14. Malta was in the lead till half-way through the match, where they led 28-24, having won the first quarter 14-10.

In the third quarter Malta increased their lead substantially, winning by 25-12, having a 17-point lead till ten minutes from time.

Coppa’s team controlled their advantage very well, further increasing the lead for a final score of 72-52.

Malta’s top-scorers were Stephanie De Martino with 20 points, followed by Rebecca Thoresen with 18 points, and Christina Grima who scored a total of 12 points.
