Sheffield United arrived in Malta on Friday ahead of next week’s friendlies against Zejtun Corinthians and Hibernians, with coach Wilson inviting youngsters such as Elliott Whitehouse and Joe Ironside to take part in the warm-weather training camp.

But Wilson said that it’s a win-win situation for these lads and should be an important part of their education and development.

“Some of the players we’ve got coming through are ready and some, to my mind, aren’t.

“But it’s important they get used to being around the senior and established players, being in this sort of competitive environment, because they are going to be around us anyway a lot next season. They should get a lot out of coming to Malta. They can really learn from it.” said Wilson.

Despite expressing concerns whether some of Shirecliffe’s most recent graduates are ready to handle the rigours of regular League One football, Wilson acknowledges the need to cut costs in the wake of May’s play-off final defeat means he must call upon their services at some stage.

Numerous supporters of the English side made the trip to Malta to follow the squad and have a holiday in the Mediterranean island.

Wilson’s squad face Zejtun Corinthians tomorrow.
