Defender Chris Smalling out for ten weeks

Portuguese winger Bebe scored in injury time to give Manchester United a 1-1 draw against Ajax Cape Town in the Premier League team's second pre-season game.

Substitute Bebe arrived at the far post to finish powerfully from a Marnick Vermijl cross at Cape Town Stadium in a game that burst into life in the final five minutes.

Alcardo Van Graan gave the home side an 85th-minute lead with a clever finish from a corner in cold and rainy conditions.

United then surged forward and Bebe kept it unbeaten on its two-game tour of South Africa, following a narrow win over Amazulu earlier in the week.

New signing Shinji Kagawa played 75 minutes in midfield, and sent a second-half header just wide from close range following a cross by Javier Hernandez.

Meanwhile Manchester United said that defender Chris Smalling will miss the start of the Premier League season after undergoing a foot operation that will rule him out for up to 10 weeks.

Smalling, who was just recovering from a groin injury sustained in May that ruled him out of the European Championship, broke a metatarsal earlier this week.

United manager Alex Ferguson says "he got an injury on the Wednesday and, straight away, we decided to have the operation so he's out ... it could be 10 weeks."

The central defender would have competed for a place in United's starting lineup for its opening game of the new league season at Everton on 20 August.
