Rachid Chouhal failed to qualify for the first round heats yesterday morning after finishing fourth in Heat Four of the 100 metres event at London’s Olympic Stadium.

Although it was not enough for him to advance, the 37-year-old runner managed to register his best performance of the season, clocking 10.83 seconds for the distance.

Burkina Faso’s Gerrard Kobeane won the heat in 10.42 seconds, the fastest time in the morning’s heats. Fabrice Coiffic, of Mauritius, was second in 10.62 ahead of St Vincent’s Courtney Williams in 10.80.

Chouhal finished ahead of Nepal’s Tilak Tharu (10.85), Afghan Massoud Azizi (11.09) and Kiribati’s Nooa Takooa (11.53) and Cook Islands’ Patrick Tuara (11.72).

Chouhal was Malta’s last performer at these Games.

Earlier, swimmers Andrew Chetcuti and Nicole Muscat had represented Malta in the pool, while William Chetcuti finished ninth in the Double Trap (shooting) competition.

On Friday, Diane Borg managed to qualify from her heat, but she still failed to better her record. She clocked 11.92 seconds, just 0.03 seconds slower than the time she clocked in the Liechtenstein Games for European Small States last year in Liechtenstein.
