A lot of slogans and features that include tax benefits on the programme Nista Nahdem are aired daily on TV and this is good thing. However, there is one old law that has never been updated, that of a housewife who does only a little bit of work and earns €500-€1000 a year but has to pay the same income-tax rate as that of her husband, as the little she earns is added to her husband’s wages. This law must be changed, as it is ridiculous.

We are a group of invigilators, all of us housewives, who do not earn more than €1000 a year yet some of us pay 35 per cent tax. Why are we always forgotten? Surely Dr Gonzi can do something about this ridiculous law; if we pay tax can it not be arranged at fixed five per cent, which is more than enough considering the little we earn.

The European Courts shall hear about this law and we hope that the MEPs will help us. All of you in Cabinet have had more that your fair share of with the €500 weekly increase, so why do you not help us housewives, who have to pay such a lot of tax for the little we receive. We hope this plea does not fall on deaf ears as we are all voters and our votes go to those who will help us change this old ridiculous law. The poor get poorer and the rich get richer!
