Athletics - Results Of the Festina 10k Night Run

For the second consecutive year, the 10 kilometers Night Run resulted in a successful event to the satisfaction of the participating athletes. The Festina 10k ‘Night Run’, organised by Zurrieq Wolves Athletics Club, was held recently in Mdina Road, Zebbug.

The Night Run gave participating athletes a unique run in completely traffic free environment.

In this year’s edition there was the participation of ninety athletes, including some foreign participants. The first three to cross the line in the male category were Jonathan Balzan in first position in 34 min. 37sec., Andrew G. Grech came in second and Antoine Abela in third place.

In the female category the first athlete was Caroline Aehling from Germany in a female race record time of 37 min. 32 sec.; second was Doreen Camilleri and third was Charmaine Aquilina.

Mr Daniel Agius, representative for Festina Watches in Malta, accompanied by Mr Wilfred Sammut, President of the Zurrieq Wolves Athletics Club, presented the trophies to the winners.

The first in the ‘open’ category both male and female were also awarded a watch donated by Festina Watches.

Apart from the awards to the first three in both male and female categories, awards were given to the first in each age category. The first athletes in the male categories were Cedric Pisani over 35, John Rapinett over 40, Noel Spiteri over 45, Pawlu Camilleri over 50, Mario Farrugia over 55 and Alfredo DeMarco over 60.

The first athletes in the female cathegories were Caroline Ciappara over 35, Simone Magri over 40, Anna Bugeja over 50 and Mary Ciantar over 55. Another Festina watch was given out through a raffle among all registered participants. All participating athletes were also awarded a commemorative medal as well as a T-shirt.

During the same run, the promising 13 year old athlete Stefano Pace Parascandolo did the fund raising 8km Run for Charity in aid of Puttinu Cares in a time of 42 min. 44 sec.

Those wishing to support this noble cause of this young athlete may still send a donation of €6.99 by sending an SMS on 50618929 until the end of August.

The organising committee will also be donating 20% of the proceeds from registration of this event to Puttinu Cares.
