Żminijietna – Voice of the Left expresses its condolences to the family of Dom Mintoff following his passing away.

Mintoff played a dominant role in Malta’s politics for decades before and after the Island’s independence. Under Mintoff’s leadership Malta cut its ties with the British Monarchy and became a republic.

His government introduced a wide range of social benefits particularly in the fields of health care, education, pension system and children’s allowances.

In the international sphere Mintoff was a leading figure in the non-aligned Movement and was instrumental in the closing down of the foreign military base in Malta.
