Loud Bangs

Malta Independent Monday, 3 September 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Each year, in almost every town and village, feasts of the patron saint are celebrated.

Part of the so-called celebration is the letting off of fireworks from as early as 8am and well into the night. I am not complaining about the colourful ones; at least those are a pleasure to watch. My diffidence is about the noisy bangs that make you shudder and, if the bang is close enough, rattles windows.

What is the scope of such noise? What do people get out of hearing such loud bangs?

It is a pity that the Church authorities allow what should be a religious celebration to be used for such practices. Such loud bangs frighten children too, are certainly a cause of noise pollution and, most of all, are money going literally down the drain.
