Transport Malta Should withdraw proposed Kappara Junction Project

Malta Independent Saturday, 8 September 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Żminijietna highly objects to the Kappara Junction project and calls upon Transport Malta to withdraw the proposed development for the construction of a bridge over Regional Road.  The reason behind this project is to link Sliema Road from Gzira to San Gwann into one road. This proposal is the second one after the first option was withdrawn.

The proposed project will take a large stretch of land in Wied Ghollieqa that is classified as an area of ecological conservation under the Act 311 of 2006.

According to the Environmental planning studies the impact of this proposal in Wied Ghollieqa will result in permanent habitat loss, alteration and fragmentation, loss of protected species, which in turn also imply loss or damage to the protected area and designating ecological features characteristics.

With regards to the discarded first proposal, we suggest that further studies are conducted to minimise the impact on the residents, along with other studies to verify the possibility if alternative solutions exists.
