Football - Injured Terry ruled out of England qualifier
John Terry will miss England's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine tomorrow because of an ankle injury. The Chelsea center back was hurt Friday in the 5-0 win over Moldova in England's opening Group H match in qualifying and joins fellow defender and teammate Ashley Cole on the sidelines. The English Football Association said in a statement Sunday that "following further treatment from the England medical staff today, John Terry will not be available for the World Cup qualifier against Ukraine" and has returned to his club. Terry's absence adds to manager Roy Hodgson's injury problems, with Wayne Rooney, Andy Carroll and Adam Johnson also out. Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka are vying to replace Terry and partner Joleon Lescott in tomorrow's match at Wembley Stadium.
Tennis - Sailor who lost leg works US Open Semifinal
Ryan McIntosh, the ballperson who lost his leg when he stepped on a land mine in Afghanistan, was working the men's semifinal yesterday between Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer at the US Open. McIntosh, 23, is an Army specialist. He was walking with his platoon through a river valley near Kandahar in December 2010 when he stepped on a pressure-plate land mine. He now wears a prosthetic right leg. He learned about the chance to become a US Open ballperson while competing this year at the Warrior Games, an Olympic-style sports festival for wounded soldiers. McIntosh got good reviews early in the tournament from his supervisor and was rewarded with one of the plum assignments - a key match in Arthur Ashe Stadium on the final weekend.
Rugby - Wilkinson OK after being hurt making heavy tackle
Toulon says Jonny Wilkinson has fully recovered after receiving a blow to his neck and head during a French Top 14 match against Bordeaux-Begles. The former England flyhalf was hurt making a heavy tackle early in his club's 42-12 win on Saturday. He was taken off as a precautionary measure, with experienced France international Frederic Michalak replacing him. Toulon said Sunday that "Wilkinson was slightly dazed but without seriousness." The 33-year-old Wilkinson made a bright start to the season, landing all seven penalties in a 21-15 win against Perpignan on the opening day.
Rugby - Raiders beat Sharks in NRL playoffs
Sandor Earl and Blake Ferguson scored two tries each Sunday to lead the Canberra Raiders to a 34-16 win over Cronulla in the first round of the National Rugby League playoffs, eliminating the Sharks. Fullback Billy Slater scored a first-half try Saturday and set up two others to lead the Melbourne Storm to a 24-6 win over South Sydney. Ben Barba scored the match-winning try with 20 minutes left as the first-place Canterbury Bulldogs beat defending champions Manly 16-10 to join the Storm with a second-round bye and a direct route into the preliminary finals in two weeks. Manly will next play the North Queensland Cowboys, who beat the Brisbane Broncos 33-16 Saturday. In the other Sydney match next weekend, South Sydney takes on Canberra.
Rugby - Flyhalf Carter to miss Springboks test
The calf injury which ruled flyhalf Dan Carter out of New Zealand's Rugby Championship test against Argentina on Saturday will also prevent him playing against South Africa in Dunedin next weekend. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen confirmed Sunday that Carter, the world's leading points-scorer in tests, is not being considered for the match against the Springboks. His place will again be taken by Aaron Cruden, who had a shaky game in wet and windy conditions in Wellington. New Zealand beat Argentina 21-5 to remain unbeaten after three rounds of the four-nation Rugby Championship. Hansen said of Carter, "he's getting older isn't he and the more you play the game the more vulnerable you are to injury and he's got quite a few miles on the clock."
Nascar - Bowyer wins race, Gordon beats Busch for Chase
Clint Bowyer won the rain-delayed NASCAR race at Richmond, and Jeff Gordon drove his way into the title picture by grabbing the last wild-card berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. Bowyer came back from a mid-race spin to pick up his second win of the season. The Saturday night victory gave the Michael Waltrip Racing driver another three bonus points to take into the Chase. But the night belonged to Gordon, who struggled most of the race but pulled off a big-time rally to beat Kyle Busch by three points for the final spot in the 12-driver Chase field. The 41-year-old Gordon battled an ill-handling car early Saturday night, took off at the end to finish second to race Bowyer.
Baseball - Orioles continue their long-ball onslaught
The Orioles continued their long-ball onslaught against the Yankees, hitting three home runs off CC Sabathia in a 5-4 victory Saturday night that moved Baltimore back into a tie atop the AL East with New York. Mark Reynolds, Lew Ford and J.J. Hardy homered for the Orioles, who have won 11 of 15 overall and nine of the last 13 against the Yankees. With a victory Sunday, Baltimore will win the season series (10-8) for the first time since 1997. Trying to secure a victory for Joe Saunders (2-1), Baltimore closer Jim Johnson entered with a 5-3 lead in the ninth. He promptly gave up three straight singles, the last a bunt by Derek Jeter, to load the bases with no outs.
