I would like to ask Finance Minister Tonio Fenech, who is being so vainglorious because Malta is no longer in recession, how this ‘improvement’, as he sees it, is benefiting me.
I have a car which I find increasingly expensive to drive because of the regular hikes in the fuel price. The electricity and water bills, on the other hand, are driving me up the wall, and I do not need the car for that. The medicines my toddler needs are on the high side, in price, and sometimes out of stock too. Sometimes, a friend buys the medicines for me from Sicily, where they are so cheaper. And I am on the minimum wage; I neglected my schooling.
If I need to refurbish my house, I have to pay for it. I have no allowance for the one bomb I have as a car, unlike the allowance the minister gets for a second car, though he has an official car and a driver at his disposal. And I get karawett for wage rises, nothing near what the minister voted for himself.
The fact is, Malta may have come out of recession, but I remain in depression.
